German Chancellor Arrives in US to Hold Ukraine Talks with Obama


(MENAFN- Qatar News Agency) Washington May 02 - German Chancellor Angela Merkel arrived Friday in Washington to hold talks with US President Barack Obama. The Ukrainian crisis will come top of two leaders' priority list.

Another issue of focus will be the US National Security Agency's spy programs which used to spy on Merkel's phone calls. The scandal has led to tension in relations between both countries.

Merkel's first order of business upon her arrival was to pay a visit to the German embassy in Washington. The Chancellor held there a meeting with members of the US Senate. She will meet with Obama later today to discuss imposing new sanctions on Russia for its intervention in the Ukrainian crisis.

The two leaders have been in constant talks via phone to discuss developments of the Ukrainian crisis. The visit is also hoped to ease the the tension between both nations following the spy scandal.
