(MENAFN - Arab News) The social welfare office for foreign workers in dammam has requested the eastern province governorate to stop transferring cases of absconding housemaids or those who refuse to work in view of the overcrowding at its office.

a decision with regard to separating maids from beggars is expected to be issued soon following a meeting that will bring together a number of officials at the ministry of social affairs.

nabeela al-zahrani branch office supervisor in dammam told a local newspaper that her office has requested the governorate the police and the passports department at king fahd international airport in dammam to help in resolving the problem of overcrowding of maids in the office. 'last year the office had to deal with 450 maids" she said.

in a ceremony held to honor the achievements of the various branches of the social welfare office in al-sharqiah al-zahrani underlined the approval of the governorate to resolve the lack of regulation and to distribute the tasks among the agencies concerned. 'these efforts have resulted in the decrease of the number of maids to the office to only 85 since the beginning of this year" she pointed out.

al-zahrani cited some important achievements of the office including the setting out of a new mechanism to bring in the maids and commit them to a number of terms and conditions such as the need for a sponsor. they would also be moved to the branch in the event of the sponsor failing to show up after 72 hours and the halting of all services for the sponsor if he does not come to take the maid.

'lack of an effective mechanism resulting in a shortage of the services provided created the crowds at the office as the maids waited around to have their problems resolved" she explained.

elaborating on the work of the different sections of the office al-zahrani said: 'every section is allocated a different service; we have a section for airport workers maids on the run and beggars."

she also said that meetings were held to separate the beggars from the housemaids. 'our extensive efforts to separate beggars and housemaids in riyadh have borne fruit" she added.

commenting on the problem of beggary she said that the numbers of beggars have generally decreased.

'now we receive only 3 to 4 cases in a month" she noted. however she stressed the fact that beggary cases increase during the holiday season such as ramadan.

al-zahrani said that begging stems from ignorance and poverty. 'nonetheless we have some organized begging networks in neighborhoods like al-badiyah and the labor city." if foreign beggars are caught they are immediately deported she pointed out.

speaking on the poor condition of the office infrastructure she said: 'following the decision of the governorate to define the tasks entrusted to the office conditions have generally improved and its capacity increased."

last year the office accommodated 450 housemaids for a whole year providing for their basic necessities food and clothing she said.

owing to a more systematic approach this year al-zahrani said 'we expect the number of housemaids at the office to be considerably less this year."
