(MENAFN - Arab News) The first saudi-indian joint committee meeting on labor issues concluded thursday coinciding with international labor day also known as may day or international workers' day.

the global celebration upholds the working class by promoting the global international labor movement.

a delegation from the ministry of overseas indian affairs comprising r. buhril protector-general of emigrants and iqbal singh bains joint secretary of the emigration policy held the first committee meeting on wednesday and thursday with the kingdom's representatives led by ahmed al-fahaid deputy labor minister for international affairs.

the meeting is being held to follow up on an agreement that was recently signed for the recruitment of domestic workers between the kingdom and india.

vayalar ravi minister for overseas indian affairs and labor minister adel fakeih signed the agreement between the two countries when the latter visited new delhi in january this year.

according to the indian embassy the agreement which was conceptualized during ravi's visit to the kingdom in april 2013 is the first step toward a comprehensive labor agreement that both sides propose to sign later.

both ministers had agreed to hold discussions and finalize the agreement at an early date.

both sides expressed satisfaction at the growing rate of cooperation between the two countries in multiple sectors including labor the indian delegation told reporters in a briefing after the meeting.

the delegation however refused further comment on the meeting's deliberations.

'both sides discussed the provisions to be included in the text of standard employment contracts for indian workers being recruited by the kingdom" one delegate said.

the indian side discussed issues related to the welfare of the indian community in the kingdom they said. 'action will certainly be taken against recruitment agencies who are found guilty of violating labor agreements" a member of the delegation said.

the phenomenon of unlicensed recruitment agencies and bogus recruitment schemes is being tackled the members said.

'this is the first time that india has entered into an official agreement on labor cooperation" one member told arab news.

'this is also the first step toward a comprehensive agreement on labor cooperation covering the entire spectrum of indian workers in the kingdom. we will implement such a scheme with other countries once we ensure that this pact has been successful."

the agreement includes clauses that protect the rights of workers and employers alike ensure the implementation of contractual obligations and stipulate penal measures against recruitment agencies which violate laws and establish mechanisms to provide 24-hour assistance to domestic workers.

a standard employment contract will be finalized after a series of meetings that would see parties agree on minimum wage working hours paid leave and dispute settlement mechanisms.

according to the indian embassy there are about 2.8 million indians living in the kingdom who constitute the biggest group of migrant communities.
