Jordan Reports 7th Case of Coronavirus


(MENAFN- Qatar News Agency) Amman May 01 - A new patient tested positive for coronavirus on Thursday bringing to seven the total number of patients affected by Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) in Jordan since 2012 the Ministry of Health announced here in a press release elayed by Petra news agency.

The patient who is a healthcare worker had come in contact with a Saudi patient who had tested positive for coronavirus last week.

Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) has so far affected several arab countries including Saudi Arabia.

To date affected countries in the Middle East include Jordan Kuwait Oman Qatar Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE)and; in Europe countries affected include: France Germany Italy and the United Kingdom (UK) and; and in North Africa Tunisia.

Middle East Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus (MERS-CoV) formerly called "novel coronavirus (nCoV)" was identified in 2012 in Saudi Arabia. Most people who got infected with MERS-CoV developed severe acute respiratory illness with symptoms of fever cough and shortness of breath.

About half of them died. A small number of the reported cases had a mild respiratory illness. Investigators are trying to figure out the source of MERS-CoV and how it spreads. There are no reported cases in the United States.
