it’s not unusual to enjoy a good sing-along at the weekend and this thursday you can party down to tom jones tribute act tony gold.
tony is set to perform at the terrace millennium airport hotel dubai as the welsh crooner – reeling off decades of hits including green green grass of home delilah kiss and she’s a lady.
city times spoke with tony who is flying in from the uk especially for the night about his life onstage impersonating a british musical icon.
as an englishman how do you channel tom jones’ welsh heritage in your act?
i began by studying his stage presence. when he performs live he’s very enigmatic and charming – something that i really try to capture. for many years i’ve watched his tv appearances and videos and built my act around his mannerisms and behaviour.
where did the idea for a tribute show come about?
i began working as a cabaret singer. i actually did it for six years and loved it. people would come up to me after the show and tell me how much i sound like tom jones and even the people i was singing with would notice it.
what’s your favourite tom jones song and why?
my favourite song is his 1967 ballad i’ll never fall in love again. i really love the tune and the lyrics the song holds a lot of meaning for me and it’s very close to my heart.
have you ever performed as tom alongside a tribute elvis (one of jones’ close friends in real life)?
yes! many years ago i performed with a gentleman called raving rupert in a show called legends in your eyes. it was a great show and he was a great singer. meeting other acts is always really exciting for me – it’s a very different world when you’re travelling singing and impersonating someone for a living.
does the man himself know about your act and has he offered his thoughts on it?
sadly i don’t think he is aware though i would love for him to hear me sing one day. he’s a great guy and i would love to get some tips from him!
are there any other acts that you think you could perform as a tribute or is it just tom?
to be honest i really only ever aspired to do a tribute to tom. our voices are so similar people say that you could close your eyes and you’d think tom was in the room. i just don’t think it would work with anyone else and i enjoy doing this far too much to give it up.

what are some of the greatest (and oddest) perks you’ve enjoyed as tom?
well i’ve mainly worked in the uk and mainland europe so being invited to dubai is definitely a highlight for me. it’s the first time i’ve been to this amazing city and i’m really looking forward to exploring it as much as possible.
