New beach patrol carts launched in RAK

(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) The ?raqib? (monitor) service will now track all anti-environment activities on beaches particularly those adversely affecting public cleanliness and the civilized image of the beaches.

the department of public works and services (dpws) in ras al khaimah has launched golf cart-type patrol vehicles to monitor the new beaches of the emirate.

the ‘raqib’ (monitor) service will now track all anti-environment activities on beaches particularly those adversely affecting public cleanliness and the civilized image of the beaches.

a senior official warned that hefty fines and stringent penalties would be imposed on violators while surveillance cameras would be installed along the qawasim corniche very soon.

ahmed al hammadi director-general of the department said the raqib car is small and can easily move on sandy beaches. “the beach behind the saudi institute here will be closely monitored in the first phase whereas the carts will start operation on other beaches later this year.”

three beach monitoring cars will be deployed in the first phase and more will be deployed later in collaboration with the rak tourism department he added. “the raqib beach patrols are being integrated with similar patrols for monitoring the roads of the emirate as well as the rak corniche and schools of the emirate in association with the rak police.”

staff inspectors have been given judicial permission to stop and fine whoever is found flouting rules and regulations he noted. “an instant fine of dh500 shall be slapped on violators.”

the violator’s id card would be withheld in case he or she fails to pay the fine on the spot and it could be collected only upon payment on the dpws premises. “if the driving licence is seized in case of nonpayment the fine will be registered in the violator’s traffic file” he said.

al hammadi said the fine is meant to curb violations not to collect money. “the beach patrols will first develop beach vsitors’ awareness while signboards will be installed along the beaches urging people to preserve the scenic image of the emirate.”

additional police patrols would be monitoring the beaches until late hours particularly during weekends to clamp down on reckless bikers and misbehaving water scooter riders.

rashid obaid al shehi said the ‘raqib’ service has spotted 837 violations so far this year. “as many as 648 tickets were issued on the spot whereas 189 were issued in absentia” he said noting that the list of violators included 368 shops 38 institutions and 431 cars and trucks.”
