S. Korea's Consumer Prices Grow 1.5% in April


(MENAFN- Qatar News Agency) Seoul May 01 - South Korea's consumer prices grew at the fastest pace in eight months last month though the price growth generally remained flat at the 1% level.

Statistics Korea said on Thursday that the country's consumer price index rose 1.5% this April compared to last April the fastest year-on-year rise since August last year according to Korea's (KBS WORLD) website.

Prices of pork and imported beef jumped 28% and 13% respectively last month from a year ago.

Gas and electricity prices rose 6.5% and 2.7% respectively while home rental prices also gained 2.5%.

However prices of Chinese cabbage and garlic plunged 66% and 25% each while gasoline prices dropped 3.8% last month.

The consumer price growth remained at around 1% over the past few months. The growth slightly increased from March at 1.3%.

Consumer price growth has been hovering at around 1% for 18 months in a row well under the Bank of Korea's target of 2.5% to 3.5%.
