One More Body Recovered from S. Korean Capsized Ferry

(MENAFN- Qatar News Agency) Jindo South Korea May 01 - Rescue workers retrieved one more body from the South Korean capsized ferry Thursday in their grueling search operations amid inclement weather conditions.

The body presumed to be that of a male student was found from the sunken ferry Sewol raising the death toll to 213 said officials of the government disaster task force. Still 89 people remain unaccounted for according to (Yonhap) news agency.

Of the 476 passengers aboard the 6825-ton ferry 174 people including the captain and most of his crew members were rescued on the day of the accident but no one has been found alive since.

Braving strong winds high tides and strong currents Coast Guard Navy and civilian divers continued their search for the missing for the 16th day which was also hampered by debris and poor visibility.

Due to the unfavorable weather the divers struggled to search the inside of the ill-fated ship that capsized on April 16 in waters off South Korea's southwestern island of Jindo.

Around 3:20 a.m. local time a specially designed airtight steel chamber called a diving bell was put into operation to help the ongoing search officials said.

The diving bell was recommend as a new tool to carry divers deeper and help them stay longer underwater to search parts of the ship that have not been scoured.

The surface temperature where the ferry capsized is around 12.9 degrees Celsius and wave heights are at 0.5 meter.
