Oman to host global education for all meeting from May 12

(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) Oman will host the last annual Global EFA (education for all) meeting from May 12 to 14 at Al Bustan Palace, a Ritz-Carlton Hotel. The meeting comes ahead of the World Education Forum 2015 that will be held in Korea.

Mohammed Saleem al Yaqoubi, secretary-general, Unesco's Oman National Commission for Education, Culture and Science told Muscat Daily, ''This is the first time such an event is being held in the region. As many as 52 to 70 countries are expected to take part in it. Oman has been quite successful in achieving the EFA goals, which is why it has been chosen as the venue for the meeting.''

According to Yaqoubi, the conference, apart from various other discussions, also aims to discuss the EFA Global Monitoring Report, which was released recently.

The meeting will see the participation of representatives from Unesco member states, EFA convening agencies, UN and regional organisations, civil society organisations, bilateral agencies, the private sector, as well as research institutes and foundations. The meeting will critically assess the progress made in achieving the goals of EFA based on the EFA Global Monitoring Report. Based on this, tangible action to follow-up and prepare the future education agenda will be taken.

EFA is a global initiative by Unesco which aims to bring the benefits of education to ‘every citizen in every society'. Six internationally agreed education goals aim to meet the learning needs of all children, youth and adults by 2015.

Goal 1

Expanding and improving comprehensive early childhood care and education, especially for vulnerable and disadvantaged children

Goal 2

Ensuring that by 2015 all children, particularly girls, in difficult circumstances and those belonging to ethnic minorities have access to complete, free and compulsory primary education of good quality

Goal 3

Ensuring that learning needs of all young people and adults are met through equitable access to appropriate learning and life-skills programmes

Goal 4

Achieving a 50 per cent improvement in levels of adult literacy by 2015, especially for women, and equitable access to basic and continuing education for all adults.

Goal 5

Eliminating gender disparities in primary and secondary education by 2005, and achieving gender equality in education by 2015, with a focus on ensuring full and equal access to basic good quality education for girls

Goal 6

Improving every aspect of the quality of education and ensuring excellence of all so that recognised and measurable learning outcomes are achieved by all, especially in literacy, numeracy and essential life skills.<
