Karzai: US and British Forces Run Illegal Prisons in Afghanistan


(MENAFN- Qatar News Agency) Kabul April 30 -Afghan President Hamid Karzai has criticized the US and British forces in Afghanistan for running illegal detention facilities in southern Afghanistan.

Karzai instructed the security institutions and Afghan attorney general to take immediate steps in order to close or transfer the NATO detention facilities in southern Afghanistan reported Khaama press on Wednesday.

The instruction by President Hamid Karzai was given after the Afghan probe team confirmed the presence of NATO jails in southern Kandahar and Helmand provinces.

According to the findings of the probe team the US forces are operating three jails in Kandahar airfield while three other jaisl are being operated by British forces in southern Helmand province.

The probe team also confirmed that a number of Afghans are kept in the jails and they have spoken with a number of prisoners who are not even having cases.

President palace following a statement said president Karzai instructed the national security advisor to discuss the presence of any other detention facility in Afghanistan and insisted that such detention facilities should be immediately transferred to Afghan government.
