S. Korea's President Apologizes for Ferry Disaster


(MENAFN- Qatar News Agency) Seoul April 29 - South Korea's President Park Geun-hye has apologized to the Korean people for the sinking of a passenger ferry that left hundreds dead and missing.

Two weeks following the tragic sinking of the passenger ferry the Sewol the president addressed the maritime disaster at a Cabinet meeting Tuesday according to Korea's (KBS WORLD) website.

President Park said she is sorry and her heart is aching from the loss of many lives. She added she isn't sure how to express her apology even to momentarily console the pain and agony of the people.

Park stressed it is lamentable that long standing problems hadn't been rectified and caused the disaster.

Referring to wrong practices that led to the ferry sinking the president then said that she will build a new framework of the country to establish a safer Korea.

Amid public resentment the government failed to effectively handle the accident Park also said she will establish a new pan-governmental control tower under the Office of the Prime Minister to deal with disasters. The president ordered her ministers to launch efforts with the National Assembly to establish the new organization of experts tentatively dubbed the national safety agency.

She also ordered her officials to come up with safety measures for the public urging the entire Cabinet to start from square one to renovate the nation.
