MoHC planning to explore Oman's entire coastline for archaeological treasures


(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) The Ministry of Heritage and Culture (MoHC) will soon be signing an agreement to carry out comprehensive exploration along the entire coastline of the sultanate to look for sunken artifacts.

''The agreement is being worked on and will be signed soon,'' said H E Salim al Mahrouqi,  Undersecretary for Heritage Affairs, MoHC, on the sidelines of the two-day fourth GCC Artifacts Seminar that began at Crown Plaza Hotel on Monday.

''The sultanate is located in such a way that these explorations can benefit other GCC countries also. Currently, only remains of a Portuguese fleet that sank in Omani waters in the sixth century are being located,'' he said. 

Around 15 teams from Asian countries, Europe and the US have been involved in the explorations in Musandam that continued from October 2013 till March this year. Dives will resume in October when temperatures are not that high. ''We are now preparing for the next season from autumn,'' H E Mahrouqi said.
