Dubai Customs seizes goods worth Dh65.3m in three years

dubai customs fully geared up to protect intellectual property rights foiled 951 bids to smuggle goods in the last three years.

ahmed mahboob musabih director of dubai customs made the announcement at a press conference while celebrating the intellectual property day at the department headquarters close to port rashid on sunday.

“as many as 23.5 million items infringing ipr with a total value of dh65.3 million were seized over the period from 2011 to 2013. dubai customs contributes effectively to creating the right environment for the local trade and investment by combating piracy counterfeiting and commercial fraud in an effort to ensure producers and creators’ rights are preserved as well as protecting consumers from the perils of fake and copied goods”.

yousuf ozair ipr director at dubai customs said the celebration is held under the theme ‘movies: a global passion’ to reflect the international concern over protecting the filmmaking industry from piracy.

“dubai customs thwarted 65 attempts to smuggle goods infringing ipr in the first quarter of 2014. these included nearly 4.4 million items valued at dh6.7 million compared to 59 seizures of similar goods hitting dh2.4 million in the first quarter of 2013.”

ozair said dubai customs is still organising its annual ipr awards for schools and universities. “the department presented the eighth dubai customs ipr awards to a number of schools that won the competition.”

the festivity saw the presence of representatives from government departments and entities strategic partners from the private and public sectors along with the winning schools of the dubai customs ip awards competition.
