(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) In a daring move, a team of instinctually disabled Kuwaitis will start Thursday the "Journey of Hope" to convey to the world Kuwait's valuable experience in caring for people with special needs, especially those suffering intellectual disabilities.
"The journey will also bring awareness to the extraordinary abilities of the intellectually disabled people," Secretary General and Chief Executive Officer of the Organizing Committee Yusuf Abdulhamid Al-Jassem said in a press conference Sunday.
"It aims to unify people of all cultures and religions towards a collective effort to care for and benefit those with intellectual disability everywhere." Al-Jassem pointed out that the journey is organized under the patronage of His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah.
"It will start sailing from Marina Crescent in Salmiya on Thursday," he said, noting His Highness the Prime Minister Sheikh Jaber Al-Mubarak Al-Hamad Al-Sabah will attend the expedition launching ceremony.
He added that the committee has completed all preparations and arrangements for the start of the journey.
The daring team will head to Washington D.C. and return back in 210 day-long expedition, Al-Jassem said.
The boat will stop in Bahrain, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Oman, Yemen, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Greece, Malta, Tunisia, Algeria, Morocco, Spain, France and Britain before reaching the United States.
It will also stop in Italy, Greece, Turkey, Cyprus, Lebanon, Egypt, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Yemen, Oman, UAE, Qatar and Bahrain before returning back to Kuwait.
Al-Jassem said that 22 celebratory events will be held at intervals in all ports en route.
The events aim to raise awareness about the needs of the intellectually disabled illnesses, he said.
Al-Jassem stated that "Journey of Hope" initiative seeks also to draw attention to the importance of social responsibility towards people with special needs and to educate people on how the intellectually disabled can be integrated into the community.
"The initiative aims to assist parents overcoming difficulties in dealing with their intellectually disabled children," he said.
