US aid for Darfur arrives in Sudan


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) UN World Food Program (WFP) said on Sunday that a new shipment of aid, around 50 tons of corn, from the US has arrived in Sudan to help victims of ongoing conflict in the troubled western region of Darfur. WFP Office in Sudan said in a statement that "the food will be distributed in areas affected by the conflict in Darfur," adding that WFP provides assistance to more than three million people, among them 300,00 displaced refugees who fled the fighting in the last few months. The statement said the aid came as a contribution from the US Agency for International Development and that the shipment was enough for nearly 7.1 million people for three month. According to WFP, corn represents the bulk of contribution worth in total USD 164 million, which was pledged by the US Agency to the World Food Program in Sudan in 2014. WFP is planning to reach 4.1 million people in all parts of Sudan in 2014, including 3.1 million people in Darfur.
