(MENAFN- The Peninsula) The Public Works Authority (Ashghal) has started work on a new expressway project, the East West Corridor in south Doha that will connect the new Orbital Highway to the Hamad International Airport and provide strategic links with the southern part of the city.
The nearly 22km dual carriageway will feature five lanes in each direction stretching from west of Barwa City to Al Matar (Old Airport) street, south of the Air Force Roundabout.
Preliminary works including temporary fencing and debris clearance have been going on at the project sites. The project is being executed by two contractors Joannou & Paraskevaides (Overseas) Limited/J&P€Avax SA (JV) and China Harbour Engineering Company, Ashghal said yesterday.
The East West Corridor includes eight grade separated interchanges that will provide new access to key roads and residential areas such as Al Matar street, Najma street extension, Barwa access road and new Al Wakrah bypass.
The project will include the upgrade and relocation of utilities, new road lighting, installation of an Intelligent Transport System and rain water drainage.
It will see the installation of 2,842 metres of drainage line and over 140,000 metres of irrigation lines across the project. Interfaces with metro rail will be accommodated in the project to allow a future long distance rail corridor. More than 6,000 street lights will be installed on the East West Corridor.
Approximately 600 trees are to be moved from the construction site and replanted in other locations determined by the municipalities concerned. The project will include over 500,000 square metres of landscaping with over 3,000 trees, 128,000 shrubs and 140,000 square metres of grass.
Ashghal said it had set mandatory standards for workers' welfare and regular inspections are being conducted to ensure compliance. It will implement an integrated programme for updating local communities on construction works. It will distribute flyers in both Arabic and English to all residents and business owners in the vicinity of the construction area. A dedicated 24-hour complaints and enquiries line will be created offering information in Arabic and English. The eight interchanges in the East West Corridor are the following:
West Industrial Street Interchange: Two-level interchange with East Industrial Road at grade and West Industrial Street as flyover connecting the New Industrial area with the planned Qatar Logistics Village.
East Industrial Street Interchange: Two-level semi-directional interchange with East Industrial Road at grade and East Industrial Street as flyover, providing better connectivity between the Industrial area and the New Orbital Highway and Truck Route, connecting it with the New Doha Port.
Al Aziziya Extension Interchange: Two-level interchange with East Industrial Road at grade and Al Aziziya Extension as flyover.
Barwa Access Road Interchange: Two-level modified semi-directional interchange with East Industrial Road at grade and Barwa Access Road as flyover moving from Barwa city to the south.
Al Wakrah Bypass Interchange: Connecting Wakrah bypass with 22 February Street. This will be a four-level all directional four-leg interchange with the East West Corridor's main line dropped to grade-1 to allow free flowing traffic, and Al-Wakrah bypass as a bridge at grade level.
Najma Street Extension Interchange: Two-level over bridge interchange with East Industrial Road at grade and Najma Street Extension as flyover.
New Industrial Area Road Interchange: Two-level interchange with East Industrial Road at grade and New Industrial Area Road as flyover connecting the New Industrial area with a newly planned logistics area.
Al Matar Street Interchange: Two-level interchange with East Industrial Road at grade and Al Matar Street as flyover connecting Al Wakrah to downtown.
