US President Visits Malaysia's National Mosque


(MENAFN- Qatar News Agency) Kuala Lumpur April 27 - United States President Barack Obama Sunday visited Malaysia's National Mosque Malaysian news agency Bernama said.

The Imam of National Mosque also known as Masjid Negara Syaikh Ismail Muhammad and members of mosque committee welcomed President Obama at Jalan Perdana this morning.

President Obama accompanied Syaikh Ismail stopped briefly at the Warrior's Masuoleum next to the National Mosque before heading to the prayer hall.

Part of his four-nation tour of Asia Obama's three-day historic visit to Malaysia is a first by a sitting US president in 48 years since President Lyndon B.Johnson's trip in 1966 Bernama said.

Built in 1965 at RM10 Million and spread over 5.2 hectares the National Mosque heralded Islam as the nation's official religion.

Its 73-metre-high minaret and a 16-point star concrete main roof are features that attract many Muslim and non-Muslim tourists.

The 15000-capacity mosque symbolises the aspirations of the then new federation of Malaysia and a tribute to its first Prime Minister Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj for role in gaining the country's independence Bernama added.
