Two Soldiers, 3 rebels killed in Kashmir fighting


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) At least three rebels, two soldiers including an officer were killed in a fierce gun battle in Indian Controlled Kashmir, police said Saturday. Police said army along with local police laid the siege of Manlo village of Shopian district in Kashmir during which they identified the house where three rebels were hiding. "We asked them to surrender. But they opened indiscriminate fire on the search parties with automatic rifles," Police told KUNA. "The forces retaliated which triggered a fierce gunfight". Later the gun battle which longed for more than 12 hours, three rebels, and two soldiers were killed, police said, adding, two houses where the rebels were hiding also got damaged. "One of the dead soldiers was a Major rank officer in the army," police said. They said the search operations in the area were still going on. Kashmir is divided between India and Pakistan, both of which claim the region, but rule it in part. They have fought two of their three wars over Kashmir. According to human rights organization, the separatist gureillas have waged a war against the Indian rule since 1989 which has claimed lives of more than 70, 000 people.
