Russia says military operations should stop E. Ukraine


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) Russia called Saturday for taking immediate measures to stop military operations in eastern Ukraine. Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, in a phone call with US Secretary of State John Kerry, said the "extremist" armed groups in Ukraine should be deterred, the political prisoners in eastern Ukraine should be released and a comprehensive national dialogue should begin to pave way for constitutional reforms. Kerry told Lavrov that Washington would try persuade the authorities in Kiev to de-escalate tension in eastern provinces, a statement by the foreign ministry said. The two ministers also discussed the abduction of a team of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) in eastern Ukraine. Lavrov and Kerry also discussed destruction of Syria's chemical weapons.
