Saudi Arabia, Oman win titles in U15 golf meet


(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) Saudi Arabia's Saud al Sherif claimed the individual title, while hosts Oman bagged the team crown in the gross category as the inaugural GCC U15 Golf Championship concluded at the Ghala Valley Golf Club on Saturday.

The two-day event was conducted by the Oman Golf Committee (OGC).

Saud shot a total of 168 to edge out Oman's Fahad al Kitani (169) by a stroke.

In the team contest, Oman produced a title-winning score of 348. The trio of Rashad al Harthy, Fahad al Kitani and Fahad al Mahrouqi - coached by Marcus Casey - finished ahead of runner-up Kuwait (357) and third-placed Qatar (367).

In the individual nett event, Saudi Arabia's Saoud al Muhannadi emerged champion with 134. Kuwait's Ali al Marafi (144) was runner-up, followed by UAE's Saeed al Balooshi (144).

UAE won the team nett title with 289, while Saudi Arabia, with 319, was runner-up.

Speaking after his runner-up finish, Fahad al Kitani said, ''Overall, it has been a good two days' experience for us. The competition level was tough. Me and my teammates enjoyed the challenges.''

Saud, who beat Fahad al Kitani by just one stroke, said, ''It feels great to finish as the champion. It is a relief because the competition was extremely tight. I was feeling the pressure all day as I was leading going into the second day's play today.''

H E Hammad al Ghafri, the Advisor at the Ministry of Civil Service and former chairman of the Oman Olympic Committee (OOC), was the chief guest at the prize distribution.

H E Ghafri said, ''It is wonderful to see Oman hosting the first U15 GCC golf event. It will encourage more youngsters in Oman to take up the sport.''

The awards ceremony was also attended by Adel Zarouni, the Secretary General of the Arab Golf Federation (AGF), OGC chief Mundhir al Barwani, OGC vice-chairman Ahmed al Jhdhamy and other sports officials.

Final scores: Gross (individual): 1 Saud al Sherif (Saudi Arabia) 168; 2 Fahad al Kitani (Oman), 169; 3 Ali al Ansari (Kuwait) 175.

Nett (individual): 1 Saoud al Muhannadi (Saudi Arabia) 134; 2 Ali al Marafi (Kuwait) 144; 3 Saeed al Balooshi (UAE) 144.

Gross (team): 1 Oman (348); 2 Kuwait (357); 3 Qatar (367).

Nett (team): 1 UAE (289); 2 Saudi Arabia (319)
