Saudi- 'Personal hygiene could prevent coronavirus'

(MENAFN - Arab News) Personal hygiene and awareness can greatly reduce the number of coronavirus (mers-cov) victims in the kingdom according to a medical practitioner who works in batha in the capital.

a total of 313 people have been affected by the virus since september 2012 and 92 of them have died during this period.

'human coronaviruses usually cause mild to moderate upper-respiratory tract illnesses of short durations. symptoms may include a runny nose cough sore throat and fever. these viruses can sometimes cause lower-respiratory tract illnesses such as pneumonia. this is more common in people with cardiopulmonary disease or compromised immune systems or in the elderly" dr. bakry mackeen general physician at the sun city polyclinic told arab news on friday.

mackeen said the clinic educates the patients and advises them to take preventive measures to keep the disease away.

'washing your hands often with soap and water not touching your eyes nose or mouth and avoiding close contact with people who are sick include the basic principles of the preventive methods against the virus" he added.

laboratory tests can be done to confirm whether the illness is caused by human coronaviruses. however these tests are not used very often because people usually have mild illnesses. also testing may be limited to a few specialized laboratories. specific laboratory tests may include: virus isolation in cell culture polymerase chain reaction (pcr) assays that are more practical and available commercially and serological testing for antibodies against human coronaviruses.
