al jazira will take on city rivals al ain in the afc champions league round of 16 after the ‘spiders’ went down to saudi arabia’s al shabab in their final group game at the mohammed bin zayed stadium on wednesday night.

abdulmajeed alruwaili’s brace meant al shabab ended with a 2-1 win and finished group a as the top team with 15 points. al jazira finished second with 10 points and will play host to al ain in the round of 16 on may 6.

abdulmajeed alruwaili had put al shabab ahead on 35 minutes but salim ali ibrahim cancelled that out with a scorcher for al jazira on 59 minutes. but with a minute left for the final whistle abdulmajeed alruwaili scored the match-winner.

al jazira began well with felipe caicedo coming close on two occasions but his efforts were saved by goalkeeper mohammed alowais.

al shabab came close through abdulrahman barakah but his attempt just whizzed past the post after he had got past goalkeeper ali khaseif. they did break the deadlock on 35 minutes through abdulmajeed alruwaili who slipped it home from close range after shin hyung-min had failed to clear.

al jazira could have got the equaliser just before half-time but shin hyung-min effort was blocked by goalkeeper mohammed alowais off an abdelaziz barrada corner. ahmed rabia al ghilani pounced on the rebound but his shot hit the woodwork. salim ali ibrahim had a crack but it was finally cleared by the al shabab defence. salim ali ibrahim put al jazira back in the game with a screamer from 35 yards out on 59 minutes. al jazira could have taken the lead but ali ahmed mabkhout failed to connect to an abdelaziz barrada cross.

it seemed that the game would end in a deadlock but abdulmajeed alruwaili had other ideas as he slotted hime with a minute left on the clock. al jazira had just about enough time to push one through but abdulaziz barrada drilled it over the cross bar.
