Obama Accuses Russia of Flouting Geneva Agreement

(MENAFN- Qatar News Agency) Tokyo April 24 - US President Barack Obama has accused Russia of failing to comply with the Geneva accord reached last week to de-escalate the crisis in Ukraine threatening more sanctions on Moscow.

He said if the behavior continues "there will be further consequences and we will ramp up further sanctions." "So far we have seen them not abiding by the spirit or the letter of the agreement in Geneva" said Obama at a press conference in Tokyo today.

He added that Moscow did not rein in "malicious and armed men" who have been taking over key government installations in the eastern cities of Ukraine rendering the Geneva accord futile.

These were Obama's first remarks since reaching the agreement between Ukraine Russia the United States and the European Union in Geneva last Thursday.

The agreement provides for the disarmament of all illegal groups and the evacuation of buildings it occupies in Ukraine.

It also allowed for reduction of tension for a few days between the West and Russia in the worst diplomatic crisis taking place in their relations since the end of the Cold War.
