EU welcomes extension of Law Mission in Kosovo


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) EU High Representative Catherine Ashton Wednesday welcomed today's vote by the Kosovo Assembly, on the extension of the EU Rule of Law Mission in Kosovo (EULEX) till 15 June 2016. She also welcomed the commitment by the Kosovo Assembly to establish a special court to investigate reports on allegations of wartime organ-harvesting, illegal detentions, killings and torture. "I commend the government and the members of the Assembly for their leadership and commitment to justice, demonstrated through what we acknowledge to be a sensitive and difficult decision," said Ashton in a statement. "The decision taken today by the members of the Assembly will strengthen the rule of law and improve the credibility of its international image. By taking such a decision, the leaders of Kosovo have opted for a better, European future for Kosovo and its citizens. The EU will continue to be a strong partner to Kosovo on its European path," she added. The Strasbourg-based human rights watchdog, the Council of Europe , in a report in 2010 alleged that former commanders of the Kosovo Liberation Army ran organised criminal groups including a network of detention facilities in Albania and called for the setting up of a special court to probe the allegations. The European Union Rule of Law Mission in Kosovo (EULEX) was deployed in 2008. It consists of police officers, prosecutors and judges to help establish the rule of law in Kosovo.
