(MENAFNEditorial) (EMAILWIRE.COM, April 23, 2014 ) Edison, NJ - New Jersey -- Breast cancer is a major problem that women around the world have been fighting against for a long time. According to a new study, these women may just have a new ally in the war against the diseaseyoga. The women who practiced yoga reported the most improvement in mood and overall quality of life, plus regulated levels of cortisol, a stress hormone. Yogis have been singing the praises of their ancient discipline for countless years as a method to sharpen the body and mind, and now medical professionals are joining the chorus. With more than 232,000 breast cancer cases diagnosed in the United States alone each year, having a new weapon to battle this crippling disease with is nothing short of amazing news. Lorenzo Cohen, professor of oncology at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston and leader of the new study, told ABC News: "The benefits of yoga are above and beyond stretching. These findings may improve outcomes in cancer survivors." Dr. Barrie Cassileth, chief of integrative medicine service at Memorial Sloan Ketting Cancer Center, backed Cohen's findings, even though he wasn't part of the study, as per ABC News: "Yoga is a very important intervention, and this was a high quality investigation. This study looked beyond the physical benefits of yoga by looking at the physiologic measure of stress: cortisol." Yoga was already highly regarded for its ability to aid physical health, emotional well-being and mental clarity. It has also been recently shown to have more medicinal benefits, such as improving the blood pressure, heart rate, breathing, metabolism and more for practitioners. The advantages of it continue to pour out, as medical professionals conduct more and more research. Slate's Brian Palmer noted that more than 200 studies alone came out in the past year alone regarding the medicinal benefits of yoga. Anyone, from a woman battling against cancer to a healthy man, is capable of doing yoga. The discipline costs little to nothing to get started and is able to be practiced just about anywhere.
