South Korea's Railway Chief Arrives in North Korea

(MENAFN- Qatar News Agency) ongyang April 23 - The head of South Korea's railway company apparently has arrived in North Korea for a conference meant to boost international cooperation between railway operators. Choi Yeon-hye president and CEO of the Korea Railroad Corp. is included in an international delegation of rail officials scheduled to attend a meeting of the Organization for Cooperation between Railways (OSJD) set for April 24-28. The North's official Korean Central News Agency reported that the delegation arrived in Pyongyang in a brief dispatch though it did not mention Choi's name. The rail conference in Pyongyang is aimed at boosting international cooperation between railway operators bringing together top rail officials from China Russia and 25 other member states of the OSJD. South Korea has long talked about linking its rail network with Russia's trans-Siberian railway via North Korea though the project has made little progress due to political and security tensions in the region. Choi's visit comes as tensions are still high on the Korean Peninsula after North Korea recently fired a series of missiles and rockets off its east coast and threatened to conduct a "new form of nuclear test."
