23 year old Omani on picnic with friends drowns in Wadi Dayqah

(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) A 23 year old Omani drowned while swimming near the foot of the Wadi Dayqah dam on Tuesday afternoon.

An official from the Public Authority for Civil Defence and Ambulances (PACDA) said that a rescue call was received at 5pm. ''One of the victim's friends called us when he did not resurface after a dive and could not be traced,'' the official said. ''The victim was on a picnic with friends. A team of divers was pressed into action to locate him.''

The official said the body was found around 7.30pm. Excess water in the reservoir due to the recent rainfall is being released downstream into the wadi and has led to deepening of the pools at the foot of the dam.

Meanwhile, the Oman News Agency on Tuesday said that the water level in the reservoir had reached 100mn m3 following rainfall in the the wilayat of Dima Wa al Taein in North Sharqiyah, leading to excess water being released into the wadi. Many people are flocking to see this, the agency said.

The excess water will feed underground reservoirs in the villages of Al Mazari, Hail al Ghaf and Daghmar, and replenish aflaj. The dam gates may be opened again over the next couple of days to release excess water, depending on any additional rainfall. <
