Kerry says Cold War era was "simpler" time

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) US Secretary of State John Kerry asserted his belief Tuesday that the Cold War era was an "easier" and "simpler" time, and stressed the dichotomies of today in "this much more complicated world. "During the Cold War, it actually -- it may not have seemed so at the time, obviously, to great leaders, but it was easier than it is today -- simpler is maybe a way to put it," said Kerry in his remarks on the second launch of Quadrennial Diplomacy and Development Review (QDDR). He stressed during the Cold War, "the choices were less varied, less complicated, more stark, more clear: communism, democracy; West, East; the Iron Curtain, the great line of divide. And many things were subsumed and quashed by that force of that bipolar world." Bringing up the issues faced today, Kerry affirmed, "The world is witnessing this explosion of sectarianism, religious extremism, radical ideologies and, frankly, too many failed states and failing states, vast challenge to governance, sometimes even witnessed here in our nation's capital." Kerry brought up the new landscape of 24/7 communication and stressed that it "changes politics, believe me. I can tell you that based on, you know, 30-plus years of being elected. It's tricky -- tricky world." On the QDDR itself Kerry hopes, "it's going to shape and guide us (the US) as we move into the future." State Department Spokesperson Jen Psaki told reporters that the QDDR "will focus on emerging policy and management priorities, and the organizational capabilities needed to maximize the impact and efficiency of this nation's diplomacy and development investments."
