US "very closely" monitoring N. Korea nuclear activity

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) The US affirmed Tuesday that it is monitoring events in North Korea "very closely" in light of increased activity reported by South Korea around a site of a North Korean nuclear area. White House Spokesman Jay Carney said during a press gaggle aboard Air Force One "here is a kind of cyclical nature to the provocative actions that North Korea tends to take, and we'll be watching it very closely." He reiterated "we closely monitor actions such as that," saying that North Korea "has a history of taking provocative actions, and we are always mindful of the possibility that such an action could be taken. "Depending on what it is and what they do, if they do anything, it would most likely be in violation of numerous commitments that the DPRK is bound by. But of course, that is something that they have, unfortunately, done many times," he noted. South Korea said today that heightened activity has been detected at North Korea's underground nuclear test site, indicating possible preparations for another atomic test. "A lot of activity is currently being seen, so our forces are keeping in mind the possibility that North Korea may suddenly conduct a nuclear test in a short period of time, or as in previous cases, deceive us with what appears to be a nuclear test," South Korean Defense Ministry spokesman Kim Min-seok said in a press briefing in Seoul.
