(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) A driver who allegedly sexually harassed a woman passenger while driving her to work was charged with molestation in the court of first instance.
the accused driver denied the charge.
the 37-year-old pakistani allegedly offered the woman a ride to work on january 8 claiming to be a taxi driver. he then insisted on not taking the fare from her and asked for her mobile phone while allegedly touching her.
the complainant a 19-year-old emirati employee said in the prosecution investigation that on the day of the incident she was waiting on the street for a taxi to go to work. “the accused stopped for me. he offered to drive me claiming he was a taxi driver. i said no but he insisted” she said.
the woman who was running late accepted the offer and got into the rear seat. they reached the clinic where she worked in al quoz. “as i was about to step out i asked him how much the fare was but he refused to take any money from me.”
the defendant then allegedly asked the victim her mobile number claiming he would contact her to take her to work daily which the victim refused. “i was shocked when he turned towards me and touched me inappropriately. he then snatched my mobile phone.”
he dialled his number from her phone and saved her number. he allegedly continued molesting her. as she tried to step out of his vehicle he reportedly grabbed her on the pretext of preventing her from falling. “i took my phone back from him and stepped outside after which the defendant sped away.”
the complainant denied having any prior relationship with him.
the complainant’s father also denied having known the accused before the incident.
