Subhash Ghai unveils new project

(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) After a brief hiatus subhash ghai is back on the big screen with woman-centric film kaanchi starring debutant mishti and kartik aryan.

he is the ultimate showman of bollywood with a glorious career spanning over thirty-five years. after a hiatus from the big screen subhash ghai is all set to present his latest venture kaanchi with two new faces this weekend.

the man who launched the careers of jackie shroff mahima chaudhary manisha koirala and isha sharvani is all set to launch bengali actress mishti as the protagonist of kaanchi. ghai admits he had a tough time convincing his company to invest in a newcomer for a big budget movie. “for the money interest of my company my office wanted me to take a big star. i wanted a newcomer because i did not want the baggage that comes with a star. i wanted that freshness. i auditioned three hundred girls before i saw mishti and she was just apt. i could see an actor in her beautiful self. i could see kaanchi in her.”

mishti the new girl did face some trying times before it was revealed to her that she has been finalised for the role. “after i finished my college i did a bengali film. one of my friends told me that ghai is looking for a lead girl. i landed in mumbai and went through a lot of auditions. i had a look test dress rehearsal and acting test because there are lots of shades in kaanchi’s character like romance anger emotion and drama. he did not tell me for a long time that i was selected and neither did i give up. he later said that for one month i would have to become his assistant director and watch him work.

“i came to office like any normal employee everyday and he gave me ugly specs to wear so nobody could ever imagine that i was the heroine. other girls used to come for the audition of kaanchi and he used to introduce me to them as his assistant director. i did not know till he announced my name that he has chosen me as the lead.”

kartik aryan the lead hero who has done two films so far is excited working on a big canvas though he admits initially he had qualms about acting in a woman-centric project. “its the first time that i am working with a director like subhash ghai. it is a big movie for me since it is a huge canvas to work with rishi kapoor mithun chakravorthy and subhash ghai. it has been a great journey for all of us. i have done pyaar ka punchnama (2011) and akaash vani (2013). in kaanchi my character has a leadership quality; he has his own self-defense academy in which he teaches defense to people from all over the village and this is something that even kaanchi follows. i will be doing a bit of action which is different from what i have done in the past because in my last two films i have played the cute guy with boyish charm. this is the first time i am playing a manly character.”

during the eighties and the nineties subhash ghai was a name to reckon with having given blockbusters like karz (1980) ram lakhan (1989) khalnayak (1993) pardes (1997) taal (1999) etc. but over time he seemed to have lost his magic touch with the audience rejecting his films like kisna: the warrior poet (2005) black and white (2008) and yuvvraaj (2008). many believe that ghai did not move forward with the times but the filmmaker is confident that he knows the rules of the box office and his latest film will hit it off with the audiece. “i have been making films for the last 37 years it has been a huge journey and i’ve made all kinds of movies like kalicharan (thriller) karz (musical) ram lakhan to saudagar khalnayak pardes and taal” ghai said. “i have always tried to make different kinds of movies though the language was mine the cinema was mine. my films are larger than life. my movies are not real; they are not like the lunchbox (2013). i cannot make that movie. i can do my kind of movies because my strength lies there. a movie like karz that was made in 1980 is still fresh like it was made yesterday even after thirty years. it means i am not wrong.”

talking about kaanchi (the character) ghai said: “kaanchi is like a light. a small innocent girl from the mountains of uttaranchal india. people of her village are used to suppression by law. but the girl says “i belong to the generation of 2014 and i will change all this.” how she dethrones these two most powerful but uncrowned kings of the country is the story of the film.”

he added “it is different from what i have made in the past. you will find my touch; music will be similar. my movies will not look like karan johar or anurag kashyap films it has to be a subhash ghai film.”
