Oman's population crosses 4mn mark


(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) The sultanate's population crossed the 4mn mark on April 1 this year, with Omanis making up 55.8 per cent, latest statistics revealed by the National Center for Statistics and Information (NCSI) show. As on April 2, the total population stood at 4,000,345 - 2,232,949 Omanis and as many as 1,767,396 expatriates (44.2 per cent).

NCSI figures show that compared to December 2013 figures, the number of Omanis has increased by 20,256 in the first quarter of 2014, while expatriate numbers increased by 23,049 during the same period.

The population of Omani men (1,130,115) was higher than women (1,102,834). The number of expatriate males stood at  1,448,816 against 318,580 expatriate women.

Muscat, Dhofar and Buraimi recorded the highest percentage of an expatriate population compared to Omani population, while the percentage of Omanis was higher in Musandam, Dakhliyah, North and South Batinah, North and South Sharqiyah, Dhahirah and Al Wusta.

Muscat governorate had the highest number of expatriates – 62 per cent of the governorate's total population – at the end of March this year. Omanis constituted 38 per cent.

The ratio of Omanis to expatriates was the highest in Dakhliyah with 77 per cent Omanis and 23 per cent expatriates. The percentage of Omanis in Batinah was 75.

The sultanate's population was 3,957,040 by end 2013. The number of Omani births recorded in the period from January to November 2013 was 62,181 registering a growth of 1.9 per cent, compared to the same period in 2012 when the number of births stood at 61,017.

Expatriate births in the sultanate during the same period in  2013 were 5,090 compared to 5,137 in 2012, showing a decrease of 0.9 per cent.

According to NCSI figures published earlier this year, the number of deaths of Omanis saw a 12.1 per cent decline from 6,007 between January and November 2013 to 5,278 during the same period last year. Expatriate deaths, however, saw an 8.3 per cent rise from 1,126 in 2012 to 1,220 in 2013. <
