David Moyes Sacked as Manchester United Boss

(MENAFN- Qatar News Agency) nchester April 22 - Manchester United have sacked David Moyes as manager replacing him with club legend Ryan Giggs until the end of the season the English club announced Tuesday. "The Club would like to place on record its thanks for the hard work honesty and integrity [Moyes] brought to the role" a short statement on the club's website said. The 50-year-old Scot who was hand-picked by retiring manager Sir Alex Ferguson to replace him last year oversaw a hugely disappointing season for Manchester United and paid the price for a sharp decline in the club's fortunes as they slumped from champions to their current seventh place Premier League position. A 2-0 loss to his previous club Everton meant that it was mathematically impossible to finish in one of the top four places which guarantee Champions League football next season. It will be the first time for United to miss out on Europe's elite competition since 1995. They are even in danger of missing out on European football altogether for the first time since 1990 and are guaranteed to record their lowest tally in their Premier League history. During his 10-month tenure Moyes watched as the title holders suffered home and away humiliating losses to fierce rivals Liverpool and Manchester City. They also lost both games against his former employers Everton and failed to win any but one of 13 games against opponents in the top eight. Early elimination from the two domestic cups didn't exactly help Moyes either especially with both defeats taking place in front of the Old Trafford crowd. Prior to his time at Manchester United Moyes led Everton over 11 years and was praised for regularly steering the club to top eight finishes having had to do with minimal budget. Dutch national team boss Louis van Gaal who announced he will leave his post after the World Cup has been tipped as potential full-time replacement for Moyes. Borussia Dortmund manager Jurgen Klopp's name was also mentioned but he has since distanced himself from the empty seat at Old Trafford. "Man Utd is a great club and I feel very familiar with their wonderful fans. But my commitment to Borussia Dortmund and the people is not breakable" he was quoted as saying by The Guardian. United's next game is at home against Norwich City.
