(MENAFNEditorial) Dubai, UAE, 22 April 2014 – In line with its continued support of youth innovation the UAE, Shell participated in a panel discussion entitled 'From Lab Coats to Business Suits' at Emirates Foundation's Think Science Fair held this week at the Dubai World Trade Centre.
Held under the Patronage of H.H Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Foreign Minister and Chairman of the Emirates Foundation for Youth Development, Think Science is one of the biggest events of its kind in the region attracting thousands of school and university students, parents, academics, investors and private sector representatives.
Shell's participation in "Think Science" is part of a long-term partnership between Shell and Emirates Foundation, which builds on nine years of successful collaboration between the two organizations in support of the UAE's youth and community. Through their strategic alliance, Shell and Emirates Foundation are working together to share knowledge, expertise, models and networks to improve social impact as well as to help promote enterprise-based or venture philanthropy for the youth of the UAE and the Middle East.
Speaking to students and recent university graduates during a panel discussion chaired by HH Sheikh Theyab bin Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Shell Vice President Abu Dhabi, Kuwait and Syria and Country Chair Abu Dhabi, Andrew Vaughan, highlighted the vital role of science and engineering in contributing to a sustainable energy future: "I believe the pursuit of science is vital to the future you are all building for the UAE and as Shell we are committed to nurture initiatives towards this end, as part of our partnership with the Emirates Foundation and our continued mission to support the UAE towards fulfilling its vision 2021 towards a knowledge-based economy."
Shell is also actively promoting youth innovation in the UAE, through its technical support of UAE universities participating in the Shell Eco-Marathon, a global competition that challenges student teams from around the world to design, build and test ultra energy-efficient vehicles. Two UAE universities competed in the 2014 Shell Eco-marathon Asia competition and placed 3rd and 4th in the global event, ahead of over 100 other teams from across the Middle East and Asia.
"Today in the UAE, there are young Emiratis, who, through their passion for science and engineering are breaking important grounds in innovation in the area of smarter mobility, a key component of energy sustainability and climate change. These young men and women are true role models and a source of inspiration for youth around the world and especially for the UAE. We hope they will encourage more young Emiratis to pursue engineering and science-based education and careers," added Vaughan.
The Fair will exhibit the scientific inventions designed and built by young UAE scientists as part of the Emirates Foundation's "Think Science" Competition alongside a range of interactive, hands-on activities in various fields of engineering, energy, aviation and other technological industries.
More than 550 youth aged between 15 and 24 from public and private schools and universities have entered their projects into the fair, which was attended by His Highness Sheikh Theyab bin Mohammed Al Nahyan and Maytha Al Habsi, Chief Programmes Officer at the Emirates Foundation, in addition to science academics and professionals from across the country.
