(MENAFN - Muscat Daily) Sales of One Hundred Years of Solitude, a popular novel by Columbian author Gabriel Garc?a M?rquez have gone up in the sultanate following his death.
Garc?a M?rquez, 87, passed away at his home in Mexico City last week. A senior salesman at Borders book store in Qurum City Centre said, ''We are seeing good sales of One Hundred Years of Solitude. Usually, there is good demand for books, by popular writers and Garc?a M?rquez's works have always inspired readers across generations. We had 25 copies of One Hundred Years of Solitude. We now have only three copies left and plan to order more to meet the demand.''
The book has sold out at The Family Bookshop in Madinat as Sultan Qaboos. An official said, ''His two popular novels One Hundred Years of Solitude and Love in the Time of Cholera are out of stock. Readers are enquiring about the availability of these two titles.'' He added that orders have been placed but it will be a couple of weeks before new stock arrives from the UK. ''Garc?a M?rquez's another popular book, Strange Pilgrims, a collection of short stories and some of his other works are however, available.''
An attendant at Turtles Book Shop in Muscat International Airport's departures area said, ''Mostly, it's European travellers who are picking up copies of One Hundred Years of Solitude. Sales of some books pick up after the death of its author. This is the usual trend.'' More than 50mn copies of One Hundred Years of Solitude in more than 25 languages have sold since it was published in 1967.&nb
