Quake Jolts Northeastern Iran


(MENAFN- Qatar News Agency) hran April 21 - An earthquake measuring 4.1 on the Richter scale rocked town of Qarebill along borders of North Khorasan and Golestan provinces in north east of Iran Monday morning. According to seismological base of the Geophysics Institute of Tehran University the epicenter of the quake was registered in an area located at 37.50 degrees latitude and 56.25 degrees longitude. There is no report on any damage caused by the earthquake according to Iran's (IRNA) News Agency. Iran sits on several major faultlines of the earth's crust and is prone to frequent earthquakes many of which have been devastating. The worst in recent years hit Bam in southeastern Kerman province in December 2003 killing 31000 people - about a quarter of its population - and destroying the city's ancient mud-brick citadel.
