Death Toll Rises to 56 from Korea's Ship Sinking


(MENAFN- Qatar News Agency) oul April 20 - Fifty-six people have been confirmed dead and 248 missing as of Sunday morning from the sinking of the six-thousand-800 ton ship the Sewol off the southern coast of South Korea. Officials at the government's emergency rescue operations headquarters told reporters that divers entered the sunken vessel and retrieved three bodies Saturday night. The three victims are high school students who were on a school trip to Jeju island. On Sunday a total of 20 bodies have been recovered from in and around the ship. The government says search and rescue divers have established five routes to get into the sunken vessel by setting up ropes as guide lines underwater. More than 550 divers are simultaneously searching inside the ill-fated ferry according to Korea's (KBS WORLD) website. The ferry sank on Wednesday morning near Byeongpung Island located west of Muan International Airport. The vessel left from Incheon on Tuesday night carrying 476 people and sent a distress signal at 8:58 Wednesday morning. Throughout the two-hour sinking 174 people were rescued from the vessel.
