suresh kumar kc manager of eldorado cinema in abu dhabi cuts a cake to celebrate drishyam’s uninterrupted 101-day run in the city

suresh kumar kc the manager of eldorado cinema in abu dhabi has seen it all when it comes to the audience response for malayalam movies in the capital.

having been associated with cinema for 17 years and with a vivid memory of the first malayalam film to play at the cinema – mohanlal’s narasimham in 2000 the current success of drishyam has come as a pleasant surprise to him. “no other film other than titanic has had such a single uninterrupted run in the uae” says suresh of the 100-day and still going strong show of the mohanlal starrer.

he says the film has a solid repeat audience and continues to draw strong houses even during week days. “this is truly historic for malayalam cinema” says suresh.

with a large population of expatriates living in the uae malayalam cinema has long been popular in the country. it takes less than a fortnight for the latest malayalam films to release in theatres here.

directed by jeethu joseph drishyam was much-awaited in the uae given its humungous collections in kerala. suresh says it is the content of the film that sustains its appeal.

he says that films like meesha madhavan had made impressive runs in the uae in the past but drishyam’s success is unparallelled.

at eldorado cinema the regular 3 to 4 screenings of the film had gone strong until 1983 and om shanti oshaana – the only two hits of this year so far – released here.

“we then reduced the number of screenings of drishyam. but despite all the new releases there is still demand for the movie.”

according to suresh the uae has the largest fan-base of mammootty. “superstars’ films always receive good initials here” says suresh. “but gone are the days when fans would support bad movies. even fans have become very discerning.”

he says that comedy films are most sought-after in the uae. “that is why the success of drishyam is even more special.”

fans of mohanlal organised a celebration at eldorado cinema to mark drishyam’s 101 days in abu dhabi. the film starring meena and kalabhavan shajon with mohanlal in a ‘common man’ role that brought back his yesteryear charm is now being made in tamil too with kamal haasan in the lead.
