Somali Pirate Jailed 12 Years in Germany


(MENAFN- Qatar News Agency) rlin April 17 - A Somali pirate who tried to slip into Germany in the guise of a refugee was jailed Thursday for 12 years for holding a German tanker for ransom in 2010. The 44-year-old man whose name was withheld under German media guidelines on privacy was convicted of extortionate hostage-taking and first-degree blackmail for his role in the eight-month detention of the German-flagged Marida Marguerite dpa reported. Judge Dieter Temming of the state court in Osnabrueck said the evidence clearly showed the accused belonged to the leadership of the pirate gang. The accused said through his lawyer he intends to appeal.
