(MENAFN - Arab News) Firefighting teams and 24 fire brigades of the civil defense joined forces to put out a fire which broke out in a furniture warehouse on wednesday in south jeddah.

“the civil defense’s operation room received a notification of a fire in the evening on tuesday and 10 fully-equipped firefighting teams were rushed to the site immediately. the fire destroyed a large part of the warehouse built over an area of 1200 sq meters. however the firefighters were in time to contain the fire and prevent it from spreading to the surrounding areas” col. saeed sarhan spokesman of the civil defense in makkah region told arab news.

detailing the mechanisms of controlling the fire sarhan said “the civil defense increased the number of firefighting teams to 14 which were distributed in 3 strands at the site of the fire. they used launchers on two snorkel sand stairs of different altitudes. the defense teams also used water trucks to hose down the flames without the need to enter the building and foam materials in the control operations he explained.

but the fire had built up so rapidly and engulfed the whole building in flames that it destroyed large parts of the warehouse despite the organized efforts of the civil defense. “however the ground teams were still able to contain the spread of the fire” sarhan said.

director of the civil defense in jeddah brig. salem mautrofi director of operations col. ghazi al-ghamdi and officers from the investigation division participated with other government bodies to extinguish the fire.

at the same time “the civil defense has asked the fire experts to work with the jeddah police to begin investigations into the cause of the fire” col. saeed sarhan said.
