(MENAFN - Muscat Daily) Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, Malaysia's deputy prime minister and education minister is likely to visit Oman next month.

Speaking on the sidelines of a media evening with Malaysia Healthcare Travel Council (MHTC) on Monday evening, H E Dato' Rustam Yahaya, Ambassador of Malaysia to the sultanate said, ''Honourable Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin is likely to visit Oman between May 11 and 15.

He wishes to meet H E Dr Rawiyah bint Saud al Busaidiyah, Minister of Higher Education and also H H Sayyid Fahd bin Mahmoud al Said, Deputy Prime Minister for the Council of Ministers. We have requested for the meeting.''

Talking about visitors from Oman to Malaysia, he said the MH370 incident has not affected tourism.

''Omanis still continue to throng Malaysia even after the flight episode. The number of tourists from China have dropped drastically,'' he said.

In 2012, 25,000 Omanis visited Malaysia followed by 26,600 in 2013.

''We are aiming at 36mn tourists from all over the world by 2020. This will be more than the population of Malaysia,'' he said. He said that Omanis do not need visas to visit Malaysia.

''Many Omanis have bought properties in Malaysia and continue to do so every year. The country is also a preferred honeymoon destination among Omanis and this year, we are promoting it as a shopping destination, too,'' he added.

Regarding future business collaborations with the country he said, ''We are looking at the possibility of participating in the upcoming rail project.

''A Malaysian company has submitted a project in this regard. We will participate in some desalination plant projects in Sohar, Duqm and Salalah.''

MHTC, under the patronage of Malaysia's Ministry of Health, is participating in the second International Medical Tourism, Equipment, Technology Exhibition & Conference 2014 (IMTEC) which began on Tuesday at the Oman International Exhibition Centre.

It will run till Thursday.

Ranked No 3 worldwide for its healthcare system by International Living in its 2014 Global Retirement Index, Malaysia is now well known and a sought-after destination for medical tourism.

The number of medical tourists to Malaysia has risen from 538,000 in 2011 to 768,000 in 2013.

''The number of healthcare travellers from GCC countries has increased from 10,000 in 2012 to 11,000 in 2013 while those from Oman were 1,000 in 2012 and 1,300 in 2013,'' Shobena Singam, manager, public relations and call centre, MHTC said.
