Saudi- Qur'an contest to be held in Jeddah next month
(MENAFN- Arab News) The saudi society of the holy qur'an and its sciences (tibyan) is going to hold a qur'an contest involving 60 universities from the public and private sectors next month in jeddah under the patronage of governor of jeddah prince mishaal bin majed
Dr. salah salim baothma director of the saudi scientific society of the holy qur'an and sciences jeddah branch thanked prince mishaal bin majed for his continuous support to the society's mission and aim of spreading the knowledge of the qur'an. he further said that the aim of the association is to spread knowledge of the qur'an in makkah universities through a distinct system of educational activities and scientific programs whose impact would extend to all segments of society
The main aim of this contest is to spread culture in the light of the qur'an and its teachings especially among the youth with the participation of 30 private and 30 public universities he explained
He said that an exhibition of books and research work with the participation of 40 exhibitors will also be held along the sidelines of the qur'an memorizing contest
The first phase will target the universities in makkah which will be followed by including all the institutes of higher education in the kingdom with the aim of instilling the culture of qur'an and its teachings. the jeddah governor will witness the closing ceremony of the program on may 13 2014 where the winners of the contest will be honored with awards
Baothma noted that almost 772000 students are currently involved in qur'an studies in the kingdom's universities of which there are 403000 female and 369000 male students in both public and private institutions
Detailing the features of the competition baothma said 'the competition has four sections: memorization of the whole qur'an with recitation in arabic; memorization of 20 chapters with recitation in arabic; memorization of 10 chapters with recitation in arabic and memorization of 5 chapters with recitation in arabic.
He said that the organizing committee had developed a number of strategies which had been implemented including the formation of a committee to develop the mechanisms of conducting the contest by experts of the qur'an
The goals of the contest include involving universities in the publications of the qur'an create awareness of the importance of the qur'an and its education among students and encourage the art of qur'an recitation among university students.
