Libya Regrets Abduction of Jordanian Ambassador


(MENAFN- Qatar News Agency) ipoli April 15 - Libyan foreign affairs and international cooperation has strongly condemned the abduction of Jordanian ambassador in Tripoli Fawaz al-Etan earlier Tuesday . The ministry said in a statement issued here today that it follows up with concern the circumstances of such a sorrowful incident with the concerned parties and field leaders and called upon the abductors to release the jordanian diplomat and urged all libyans to respect the foreign diplomatic missions in the country stressing meantime that the incident would not at all affect the fraternal bilateral relations . Meanwhile Libyan interim prime minister Abdullah al-Thanni on Tuesday expressed his deep regret over the abduction of Jordanian ambassador in Tripoli Fawaz al-Etan and said Libyan authorities were trying to secure his release. Libya's foreign ministry earlier said that several masked gunmen in two cars kidnapped al-Etan after firing at his car injuring his driver. The Jordanian foreign ministry said it was following the incident closely with the Libyan authorities. In a telephone call with Prime Minister Abdullah Ensour al-Thanni said his government was in an open emergency meeting and that Libyan authorities were doing their utmost to secure the release of the ambassador. Al-Thanni expressed Libya's solidarity with the Jordanian people and the ambassador's family commending the "deep brotherly" ties and Jordan's support of Libya. Ensour said during the telephone conversation that Jordan had stood by the side of "the brotherly people of Libya" to achieve security and prosperity in the country. He called for joint efforts by the concerned authorities in both countries to secure the freedom of the ambassador which he said is a top priority for the Jordanian government and its agencies
