Ban, UNSC strongly condemn recent terrorist attacks in Nigeria

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and the Security Council members late Monday strongly condemned the terrorist attacks at a bus station near the Nigerian capital Abuja on Sunday and Monday, and called for the perpetrators to be brought to justice

The multiple attacks, claimed by the terrorist group Boko Haram, reportedly killed over 70 commuters, who were about to board buses and taxis to go to work, and injured scores more

"Shocked and saddened" at the many lives lost during the attacks, Ban "strongly condemns all indiscriminate killings and acts of violent extremism," his press office said in a statement, adding that the perpetrators, and those responsible for the continuing "brutal" attacks in the northeast of the country, "must be brought to justice." Council members, currently chaired by Nigeria, also "condemned in the strongest terms" those terrorist attacks and reaffirmed their determination to combat all forms of terrorism and its threats to international peace and security by "all means," according to the UN Charter

They reaffirmed that terrorism in all its forms and manifestations is "criminal and unjustifiable," regardless of its motivation, wherever, whenever and by whomsoever committed, and "should not be associated with any religion, nationality, civilization or ethnic group." They also underlined the need to bring perpetrators, organizers, financiers and sponsors of those "reprehensible acts of terrorism" to justice, and urged member states, in accordance with their obligations under international law and relevant Security Council resolutions, to cooperate actively with the Nigerian authorities in this regard
