(MENAFN - Muscat Daily) It is important to begin involving children in environment conservation from a young age.

''They should be made to understand the importance of environment conservation and should feel responsible towards it,'' said Dr Saif Bin Ali al Hajari, founder and chairman of Friends of Environment Center (FEC) - a group based in Qatar that works towards saving the environment.

He was talking on the sidelines of the third international conference on waste management held at Al Bustan Palace, a Ritz-Carlton Hotel recently.

Dr Hajari, who has been working in the field of environment conservation for the past 25 years has initiated various activities.

FEC is one such initiative which helps in spreading awareness on  the issue among students, families and local communities.

''Every weekend, we organise talks and workshops at different public places. Parks are the best places to interact with families and children. Everyone is in a good mood so they don't mind paying attention to what we have to say. And this way we associate with several people and spread our message,'' added Hajari.

During talks and workshops, the organisation stresses on things that can be incorporated in daily life to save the environment.

One of the main topics is proper waste management.

FEC also organises art competitions with themes revolving around environment conservation.

Apart from this, it holds quiz programmes and uses handicrafts to promote the cause.

The organisation also uses the Internet to make students aware about nature.

''Only if children get to know about nature, will they find it fascinating and would want to know more about it.

''We are constantly trying to generate interest among children and adults.

Organising meetings and interacting with families gives us a lot of hope that we are moving in the right direction,'' said Hajari.&nb
