(MENAFN - Muscat Daily) Begining this year-end, Helmi Hilal al Kindi, an Omani social activist, will visit several countries around the world to raise awareness on the effects of drug abuse.

He will walk for ten hours a day, covering a distance of 30km in each country.

The awareness drive will begin in Oman at the end of December and will continue for a year.

He will be covering GCC countries, Iran, India, Asia, Australia, some Latin American nations and the US.

Kindi, who was a drug addict for 12 years, said he was able to overcome addiction with help of his family.

Since then, he has conducted over 300 meetings and has counselled over 1,000 people against drug abuse.

''I had taken to drugs after several personal and professional problems. I was constantly in a psychological war. Finally, I decided to end it with a will of steel,'' Kindi said.

Kindi will be accompanied by a 12-member crew, comprising doctors, linguists and filmmakers.

A documentary on the awareness drive will be produced later by the Oman Film Society, led by Qassim al Sulaimi.

Rami Murtada, owner of Wolf Productions, which is sponsoring and promoting the event, said, "I have been promoting social awareness events for years.

''I have worked on events related to cancer, blindness and drugs in Dubai and Syria. When I met Kindi, I was inspired to come up with this idea to spread awareness against drug abuse.''
