Egypt's election body to allow EU monitor presidential elections

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) Egypt's High Election Commission signed Sunday a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the European Union (EU) to send a European team to help monitor upcoming presidential elections

Commission Chairman Justice Anwar Al-Aasi, at a joint news conference with head of the EU Delegation to Egypt Ambassador James Moran, said the commission was keen on holding fully transparent elections

The commission, he added, wanted to inform the public opinion in and outside Egypt that the North African country was taking steady democratic steps

Al-Aasi said the commission would allow the EU team to access electoral centers to monitor the process along with civil society organizations

Ambassador Moran said sending an EU team was part of cooperation between the two sides

He said the EU would help Egypt hold comprehensive, transparent and credible elections with the objective of bolstering democracy, rule of law and human rights
