(MENAFN - The Peninsula) More than 200 professional and amateur athletes took to the waters and streets between Qanat Quartier and The Pearl-Qatar Boulevard for the first triathlon on the island

Many came from other GCC and Middle East countries for the event which had two routes: Sprint and Olympic: 750 metre and 1.5km swim, 20km and 40km bike ride and 5km and 10km run, respectively

"It's a fabulous venue, and fits perfectly with our strategy to mobilise the community, young and old, to adopt a healthier, active lifestyle," said Roger Dagher, Director, Corporate Communications, United Development Company, the master developer of The Pearl-Qatar

"We are thrilled to see an overwhelming interest in the triathlon considering the athletic level needed to compete requires a high degree of professional training, so obviously people in Qatar hold a dear commitment to sports and competitive challenges.

He was delighted that a huge triathlon was taking place at The Pearl-Qatar. "We had a great crowd, and the weather was on our side. People seemed to have enjoyed the course, especially the bike ride through the scenic Pearl-Qatar Boulevard.

The top three in each category received financial prizes, bringing to 30 the number of winners in all five categories each of the Sprint and Olympic tracks

They included Open men/women, Masters men/women and Open men/women Relay.

Premier Online, the region's leading provider of event registration, online race services, sports timing and consultancy, formed the judging panel

Ronald Molit, who won the (Open Men) in the Sprint category, said he had worked hard for the competition and would the experience of competing in The Pearl-Qatar.

Completing a triathlon is seen as a major achievement and crossing the finish line no matter your place in the track can be a hugely rewarding experience" Molit, said.

"I'm grateful to The Pearl-Qatar for giving us the impetus to push our limits and be part of such a mega event bringing us together with other athletes from the region."

Like bungee jumping, drag racing, fly boarding and paddling, all recently hosted at The Pearl-Qatar, the triathlon promises to add value to the island's reputation of attracting extreme and crowd-pleasing sports, widening the horizons of sports-lovers and reinforcing the positioning of the island as lifestyle destination

The Qatar Olympic Committee has dubbed the triathlon a professional sporting competition
