Cornet outlasts giorgi to win in katowice

(MENAFN- Kora) The frenchwoman headed into the contest as the heavy favourite following her surprise triumph over top seed and home hope agnieszka radwanska in poland on saturday.

Yet she was provided with a stern test by giorgi and needed over three hours to beat her italian counterpart 7-6 (7-3) 5-7 7-5.

Cornet broke serve in the sixth game of the first set to level at 3-3 after twice falling a break down but then spurned three set points as giorgi stood firm to force a tie-break.

However cornet's quality shone through in the breaker as she dominated to take the set.

The world number 22 looked to be on her way to an easy success when she surged into a 3-0 lead in the second but giorgi displayed admirable spirit and fought back to brilliantly breaking cornet three times to force a decider.

The third set followed a similar pattern with cornet racing 3-0 ahead only for giorgi to again demonstrate her resolve and move 5-4 in front.

And it looked as if giorgi was going to complete a remarkable comeback when she went 40-30 up on cornet's serve in the very next game.

However the 22-year-old could not convert that chance and duly capitulated dropping serve to hand cornet an advantage that she did not waste as she sealed the match with an emphatic love service game.
