Oman, Estonia discuss use of IT in healthcare


(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) Medical experts from Oman and Estonia discussed issues related to the healthcare sector at a seminar on ‘Innovation in medicine. Next generation e-health' recently. 


Estonia is the first country in the world to implement a nationwide e-health record system, a press release said.


Speakers at the seminar included Margus Tsahkna, chairman, Omani-Estonian Parliamentary Group; Mart Einasto, a member of the executive board of Tartu University Hospital; Kati Korm, head of IT development department, Tartu University Hospital and Taavi Einaste, head of e-health business unit, Nortal.


Tsahkna was quoted in the release as saying, ''We believe Estonian e-solutions can be of use in Oman. The Estonian government supports companies such as Nortal that export their know-how.''


Einasto spoke about the trends, developments and challenges in the health sector. ''Ageing population and rising costs should drive us to be more innovative and effective.''


Kati said that the success of a medical IT-solution depends on  whether the system is beneficial to all stakeholders - the government, doctors and patients.


''The Estonian National Medical Record is a success story because the features of the system benefit all parties.''


Einaste said, ''The Estonian success story enables Nortal to take the good experiences but also considers on the weaknesses from Estonian medical systems, to build even better solutions for our international customers. So we have a lot to offer for the Omani healthcare sector.''


The audience included representatives from the Ministry of Health, The Royal Hospital, Sultan Qaboos University Hospital, and the Armed Forces Hospital.  The next e-health seminar on National Medical Records in Oman will take place in Oc
